Basal area

The cross-sectional area of a tree measured at 4.5 feet above the ground. Basal area is used to estimate the density of trees in a stand in order to describe habitat and to develop timber management recommendations.  Some timber harvesting regulations use basal area to guide the amount of trees that can be harvested from a given area.
