Dead tree trunks and branches lying on the forest floor. Coarse woody debris provides important cover and feeding habitats for a variety of wildlife species. It is also an important carbon reservoir and plays a significant role in nutrient recycling. In some regions, coarse woody debris is an important fuel source for forest fires.
